Theatre’s Golden Age?

The great period of the literature in Elizabethan Age ,was according to my opinion one of the most important legacies in her reign ,not only she impulse the poetry but she was the inspiration of many playwrights of her time ,but not everything was so good ,although she inspired the literature ,the theatre was still considerate a not respected and low paid profession .So there is a question that I would like to make to all of you. This was really an evolution period for the Performing Arts?
According to my opinion the theatre in Elizabeth’s Age didn’t evolve so much, the profession was considerate mediocre even “the actors were seen for the society as vagrant troublemakers who promoted hard living and sin” (Mularski, 2003), so in this way the Elizabethan Golden Age wasn’t so great with the Performing Arts as well it was with the literature. The theatre didn’t had the place that deserved in the society.
This is very contradictory knowing that William Shakespeare in this period produced and write what I believe the most important plays in the English Literature History. He was inspired by Elizabeth and her reignShakespeare was ardently attracted to Elizabeth and her Court”(Brown,2009). All the plays that he created showed the Elizabeth I reign as a powerful and solid empire, so I don’t understand how the theatre was left behind been able to show directly to the world her consolidated empire.
I believe that the theatre in Elizabeth’s Age didn’t had all the support that deserved, It was left behind considering all the potential that it had .Although this was a Golden Age for literature, the theatre was considered a mediocre profession not well seen in the society .In my opinion the theatre had the chance to become great and instead left many debts to the history of the period .So dear bloggers what do you thing?

  1. When she was a little girl, she studied all about arts. She really loved the theatre but in these times, only the man could act. Perhaps this influences for her to take decisions about the arts in her reign.

  2. I always though that the theater was respected at that time because some of the plays that were performance represented the Queen's greatness but now I can see it in a total different view considering that a lot of the theater were closed for many reasons, which made more difficult to represent this kind of art

  3. First of all, Allison you have very good ideas but you have to be careful with you writting and you should proofread it.

I liked your point of view about the Art aspect of Elizabethan Era, because as fernanda said, I thought too that in that time the theater presentations were admired by the people and also by the authorities that in this case is the queen.

I believed that Elizabeth was very grateful with Shakespeare, and also I read somewhere that they knew each other and she liked his literature.
She loved the plays and the literature of Shakespeare.
Maybe the recognition was not enough. Maybe they should be better payed, but that was in that century, and all the context are different.
Now that we have learned all the history we think another way, but the mentality that they had in that time.

Here I found this interesting source about the Elizabeth's and Shakespeare's Relationship
